Apple should have more customers

Working in the tech department for a major PC retailer makes me wonder everyday why Macs aren't more popular. I'd say 90% of the computers I see are spyware or virus riddled, and the users have little or no knowledge of how to prevent it from reoccurring. Another frustration is that our pricing structure doesn't have a complete prevention option, where spyware gets removed, and then we make sure software is installed and patched so it doesn't happen again. For instance, I did a complete reinstall of XP on a desktop the other day, and it was clean going out the door. The next day, it came back with popups and since we have a 30 day guarantee on our services, we provide service free again. So, I'll likely throw on a MS AntiSpyware Beta, and a free copy of ZoneAlarm set to lock everything down, and XP service pack 2. All these things are services that we are supposed to charge for, but I don't want an angry (however illinformed) customer coming back yet again. And people don't understand (and then reflect their anger at us tech folks) that computers aren't necessarily secure out of the box. Be nice to your tech person. If they're family, feed them or give them a case of beer. Or consider getting a Mac if you are not willing to put in the [significant] effort in running a somewhat secure Windows machine. It will make things simpler for both of us.

Television needs to rethink itself

TV as it is now is dying, and I couldn't be happier. In the next living arrangement I find myself in, roommates permitting, I am seriously considering not getting TV service. I'll keep my TV with the xbox hooked up, and a dvd player, but I want to go without cable or satellite. For one, it will be a huge time saver. I don't even want to begin to think about how much time I'd save not lying on the couch. Then there's the money. When all is said and done, in our house of 5 people, we spend about $60 a month on cable, or yearly a little over $700. And this is to watch canned shows, with a 30% ad content. When you stop and think about it, it's actually pretty rediculous that TV occupies such a central spot in our lives.
I've written about how great BitTorrent is, and another great thing about it is how you can download almost any show after it airs on TV, without ads. If this natural market shift was to be allowed to continue, television production would need to change it's source of revenue from advertising dollars to something along the lines of audience subscription. New shows would involve a certain amount of risk, but investors could back projects much like they do in the movie industry hoping for returns. But until then, I'll take my free tv, ad free.

Overdue update. I'm a techie now

I've been busy at work, and neglecting to update this page. I'm taking over the tech service desk, which is daunting, but flattering considering how new I am at the company. I've been collecting data recovery tools and utilities, as well as every flavour of boot disk to make my life easier. I'll post a good list of my essentials when I have the chance to play around a bit more with them. Knoppix 3.7 is definitely there - that and a 2.5" notebook harddrive enclosure for hooking up laptop HDs when the laptop won't start. Mine arrives by UPS any day now.

For those of you with xboxes, go here and get a free replacement xbox. Could save yourself from a housefire, and why not get Microsoft to courier you something on their dime?

Tip of the day: if you want better service in retail, brush your teeth.

Great night at Charity Ball

Last night's Charity Ball was a fun time. Katie looked gorgeous in her dress, and I think I did OK in my new suit. I'm hoping I get some copies of the many photos that were taken, and then I'll post a few.

del.icio.us

del.icio.us

Try this out when you're bored...from what I can tell, it's a repository of people's favorite websites, and is updated all the time...so news stories and cool new websites get listed quickly. It seems pretty cool.

Another life step

I bought a suit today...hopefully that will help motivate me to figure out what I'm doing with my life.
